Calculating the Cumulative Grade Point Average

The CGPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points (grade points earned multiplied by course credits) earned by the total semester credits for courses completed at West Coast University.  Please refer to the West Coast University Grading Scale for courses that are not included in the CGPA calculation.

Grade Rounding

At West Coast Unviersity, scores are not rounded to the whole number until the end of the term.  All student assignments, quizzes, and examinations will be rounded to the first decimal piont.  At the end of the terms final course grades will be rounded to the nearest whole point.

Examples are provided below:

Individual Assignment Grades

81 = 81
76.579 = 76.5
92.445 = 92.4

End of Term Grade

83.2 = 83
89.7 = 90
75.4 = 75

Please see the Grade Rounding Addendum for additional information, effective November 2013.

General Education Grade Requirements

Any student enrolled in the BSN, LVN to BSN, or RN to BSN Track must complete all General Education courses with a minimum grade of “C-,” as indicated on the Numerical Grade Conversion Scale outlined in this catalog. Any General Education course with an earned grade of “D+” or below will not be accepted for credit and therefore must be repeated. Students should contact their academic program department for specific information related to grade requirements in the major.

Nursing Program Grade Requirements

Students must earn a minimum grade of “C+” in all NURS courses, using the scale outlined in the Grading section of this catalog. Courses in which a “C+” or better is not achieved must be repeated. Students who fal the same course twice or fail a third course (including General Education courses) will be dismissed from the University.  Medication math competence is required in core clinical courses.  If a student is unable to pass the medication math test after three attempts, the clinical course is failed.  Withdrawal from the clinical course is not an option. The student will also be required to withdraw from the concurrent theory course.  The specific course syllabus provides more information.

Pre-licensure didactic and clinical courses are taken concurrently (e.g. NURS 201 and NURS 210L).  If a student fails a didactic course, it will be necessary to enroll in NURS 499 Independent Study in Nursing, when repeating the didactic course.  This course provides the student an opportunity to apply knowledge to clinical scenarios.

Dental Hygiene Program Grade Requirements

Students must earn a minimum grade of “C+” in all DHYG courses using the scale outlined in the Grading section of this catalog. Due to the didactic and clinical practice requirements for licensure, progression in the Dental Hygiene program from one term to the next is imperative to student success and for patient safety; therefore, Dental Hygiene students who do not earn a minimum grade of “C+” in each DHYG course in each term will be dismissed from the program.
