Calculating the Cumulative Grade Point Average

The CGPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points (grade points earned multiplied by course credits) earned by the total semester credits for courses completed at West Coast University.  Please refer to the West Coast University Grading Scale for courses that are not included in the CGPA calculation.

Grading Scale

The progress and quality of students' work is measured by a standard 4.0 scale as follows:

Note: AU, CR, I, P, NP,TC, and W are used on the Academic Record but have no point values and are not computed in the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) .

C+” is the minimum passing grade in the Nursing Program.

C*” and “C-*” grades in Nursing, courses reflect that the course has not been successfully completed.

P”/"NP" is the grade earned for all Nursing Clinicals, Global Studies/Symposium,Capstone courses, and NURS 480 only.

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed only for courses taken at West Coast University. The CGPA is determined by dividing the total grade points by the total semester credits completed at West Coast University.  Courses with the NURS prefix fall under the Nursing numerical grading scale.  The University does not offer remedial classes.  Audited (AU) courses award no credit and receive a grade of “AU”, which is not included in the CGPA or rate of progress calculation.

Grade Rounding

All student assignments, quizzes, and examinations will be rounded to the first decimal piont.  At the end of the term or semester, final course grades will be rounded to the nearest whole point.

For programs that use the exam average to determine whether other course assignments are included in the final scoring (e.g., Nursing), the end-of-term exam average may be rounded (using the above rules) to make that determination.

Examples are provided below:

Individual Assignment Grades

81 = 81
76.579 = 76.5
92.445 = 92.4

End of Term Grade

83.2 = 83
89.7 = 90
75.4 = 75

General Education Grade Requirements

Students enrolled in the BSN, LVN to BSN, or RN to BSN tracks must complete all General Education courses with a minimum grade of “C-,” as indicated on the Numerical Grade Conversion Scale outlined in this catalog. Any General Education course with an earned grade of “D+” or below will not be accepted for credit and therefore must be repeated. Students should contact their academic program department for specific information related to grade requirements in the major.

Undergraduate Nursing Program Grade Requirements

Students must earn a minimum grade of “C+” in all undergraduate NURS courses, using the scale outlined in the Grading section of this catalog. Courses in which a “C+” or better is not achieved must be repeated.
