CMHC 510 Professional Orientation: Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling

This course examines the professional, ethical, and legal issues related to the practice of professional counseling. Topics addressed include ACA Code of Ethics content such as informed consent, confidentiality, client rights, and malpractice as well as other regulations influencing the practice of counseling. The course also examines the major decision-making models used for resolving ethical dilemmas. Legal standards and California laws related to counseling practice will be explored, including issues related to dissolution; childcare, custody, and abuse; involuntary hospitalization; mandatory reporting requirements; detection, assessment, and treatment of domestic violence; and other issues related to the relationship between the law and counseling.
Course delivery methods for teaching and learning include online, blended, and face to face modalities.
